This is a place-based project to get local high school students involved in protecting ecological communities where outdoor sports take place. Students will help create a short film that explores the impacts of three activities in Jackson Hole; fly fishing, skiing/snowboarding, and climbing.

From the beginning, our mission has been to influence change and promote inspiration in younger generations, showing students that their voice and creativity has an impact. The purpose of this short film is to blend outdoor sports, ecology, and education in order to better understand the impacts humans can have on a local community. This program seeks to develop an ongoing relationship with schools in Jackson Hole to showcase students' creative, innovative, and meaningful ways of connecting with the community and having a final product that displays those connections.

Context

Location: Jackson Hole, WY

Target audience: Those interested in outdoor sports

Jackson Hole is an outdoor enthusiasts' heaven. Individuals travel to the area to recreate in the valley, mountains, and rivers. The main takeaway from this project is for students to work hands on by creating a short film about the impacts that outdoor sports have on the local environments and organisms that live there.

The team: 15 high school students

A group of 15 high school students will help film, perform in person interviews, obtain business sponsorships, create soundtracks, and conduct background research about local ecology. These students will bring a different perspective of outdoor recreation and will contribute personal stories about their experience of growing up in Jackson Hole. Students will also be presented with the opportunity to put their outdoor sports skills to the test, on screen.

Local business sponsorships: Teton Science Schools, Teton Gravity Research, Stio, and Snow King Mountain Resort.

The business sponsorships have been chosen because of their reputation of being local, environmentally conscious and accessible to students. Additionally, the hope is that these businesses would be willing to advertise or host screenings of the film, followed by a platform for students to participate in a Q&A about the film making process.
